After a little over a month of accepting answers and a couple of weeks organizing the data, we have now concluded our first ever survey with the deobi ficdom!

Like stated in the form, this was an informal (read: unprofessional and unscientific, just vibes) survey to give deobis the opportunity to see how many people share their love for a specific pairing, trope, reading/writing habit, etc.

Before we get to the fun part of crunching numbers, a quick note: while it sure is nice to go wait, someone else likes this rarepair too?! when seeing a fellow shipper in the wild, we want to stress that these results should not be treated as a guide, or as a rule book. Fandom is the place to do what makes you happy, to find community, to explore things you enjoy just because you want to - something being popular doesn't make it "better", just like something ranking low in a survey doesn't mean it's any less exciting.

So don't take anything here to heart! Sure, use the data to convince your author best friend to write for your favorite ship, but don't let the numbers get to your head. We're all just being silly here!

That being said, let's get down to business.

HOW IT WORKED

The form was open from November 24, 2023 to January 1st, 2024 (KST timezone).

There were two sections: one for readers and one for writers. Aside from 2 required questions for organization purposes, everything else was optional and could be skipped. There were 16 questions for readers and 10 questions for writers, so 26 total if you answered both.

Most questions were multiple choice (i.e. you could check more than one box), with the exception of 1 write-in question for each section and 1 single choice question (i.e. you could only choose one answer) for the writers.

Some questions included an option to write your own answer in addition to checking boxes. These answers are referred to as "write-in" or "other" on the graphics and at the end of this post.

41 (91.1%) love to receive comments on their work

RESULTS

First things first: where do we read and post fic?

How often do deobis read TBZ fic and check the TBZ tag on AO3?

The next few questions were aimed at readers, so it's all about reading habits.

What are our relationship preferences as readers?

What universes and tropes do we love to read the most?

Do deobis avoid fics with warnings?

And what do deobis like to read in terms of age ratings?

What are our wordcount preferences? And do deobis prefer oneshots or chaptered fics?

How do we give feedback?

Let's see if readers and writers are on the same page. The following questions were asked to both groups.

So, about that "Hyunjae vs Jaehyun" debate... How do deobi readers and writers deal with stage names? And what about the Korean names of English-speaking line?

(We could've added specific options for each member's name, but that would mean a much longer question, and a possibly more exhausting form to fill out. The main takeaway here, if we were to offer our two cents, is that there's not one right way to do it, and sometimes the most representative answer is just that: it depends.)

What are our favorite dynamics to read and write in TBZ?

Ok, those are the dynamics, but what about specific members? Do deobis have a member they like to read in fic? And do deobi writers have a member they write more often?

Ships! All the ships! Which ones do deobis like to read and write the most?

Now for questions that were meant specifically for writers, so our writing habits.

How do stats and feedback influence our writing? And what kind of feedback do we prefer?

In fandom terms, what motivates us to write TBZ?

Hypothetical scenario time! If asked to choose only one MV/era to write about, which one would deobi writers choose?

Lastly, for each section there was a space for deobis to write comments, messages, feedback, anything they felt like sharing. There were plenty of sweet messages and some interesting insight into deobis' likes, dislikes, and overall habits within the ficdom. Let's go through them!

I’m always grateful to any deobi writers, the fic world here is a little smaller and more sparse than some other fandoms but anyone who writes pls know you are very appreciated!

My preferences boil down to authors at this point, since this fandom is so small still. I'll read basically anything by a select pool of writers, with exceptions for existing media aus (harry potter aus, pacrim aus, marvel aus) mostly because i think those are boring.

I also will raid people's bookmarks for fics. I am rarely in the tag for any fandom, I'm just raiding everyone else's bookmarks.

I appreciate everyone who contributes to the fandom. It is quite a small fandom so I'm super happy whenever I see something new to read!

i used to write a lot more for tbz but i kind of fell out of writing for them bc i invested a lot into reading and commenting on other writers fic and trying to build relationships but it never felt like i got much in return and the engagement felt so low that i kind of just quit altogether? im not blaming anyone ofc its not anyones fault but thats the honest reason i stopped writing for tbz :')

To readers: please remember that the writers do this for fun in their free time and won't always have time to post regularly, or they might feel inclined to abandon a fic mid-story just because. It's their craft and time, please respect that.

I know it can be scary to leave a comment, but I can promise you that most writers will be happy - whether it's a long unhinged comment, a very emotional one, or just crying emojis. <3
